Youth Justice Committees involve a young person accused of minor non-violent
offences meeting with his or her guardians, a small committee of trained community
members and the victims of their offences to negotiate an appropriate way for
the young person to make amends for his or her actions.
Funded by the Ministry of the Attorney General,
Youth Justice Committee programs are being established in 54 communities throughout
Ontario as of 2007.
The Committees are made up of volunteers in the
community who work in partnership with criminal justice professionals
to develop measures that will hold young people accountable and
and present an alternative to formal court proceedings.
Operation Springboard administers Youth Justice
Committees in two communities:
· Scarborough
· York Region
The Scarborough Youth Justice Committee is operated in partnership with the West
Scarborough Neighborhood Community Centre.
